Costa Rica Deports U.S. Citizen Wanted On Drug Trafficking Charges

Costa Rican authorities have deported a U.S. citizen identified by the last name Duran, who was the subject of a Red Notice for his arrest and extradition.



The Red Notice was issued by the U.S. Department of Justice of the State of Pennsylvania, U.S.. Duran faces charges including cocaine and fentanyl trafficking, as well as criminal association.



The 53-year-old was turned over to U.S. agents on Wednesday at Juan Santamaría International Airport in Alajuela. The transfer was coordinated by Interpol and Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ).



According to OIJ, Interpol agents acted on intelligence provided by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. They arrested Duran in May after locating him in a public area in San José.



Following standard security procedures, he was taken into custody and transferred to the Migration Apprehension Center in San José, where he remained until his extradition was completed on Wednesday.






Authorities said no additional information will be released and noted that only Duran’s immediate family may request further details.



In similar cases, OIJ recently deported a Nicaraguan national identified by the last name Herrera, who was wanted in the United States on charges of sexual abuse and rape of a minor.



As part of ongoing joint efforts between OIJ and Interpol, officers this week also arrested a 44-year-old Russian man wanted on a Red Notice issued by Panama on suspicion of child abduction.



The OIJ urged the public to report individuals who may be subject to international Red Notices. Confidential tips can be submitted by calling the 10-digit line 800-8000-645 or the short line 1176. Bilingual agents are available in English and Spanish.



The OIJ, a division of the Supreme Court of Justice, handles criminal investigations and has nationwide police authority.
