Costa Rica marked Workers’ Day on Friday with the swearing-in of new lawmakers and the annual election of the president and vice president of the Asamblea Legislativa.

The holiday allows most government offices, private businesses and international agencies to be closed nationwide and honors laborers and the working class and is recognized globally by the international labor movement.

The new members of Congress took office following their election by direct vote in February’s presidential elections, in which Laura Fernández-Delgado was chosen as the country’s 50th president for the 2026–2030 term.

The incoming legislature is made up of five political factions. The largest bloc is the Sovereign People’s Party, a right-wing group aligned with President-elect Fernández, with 31 seats. It is followed by the National Liberation Party, a center-right party, with 17 seats, and the Broad Front, a center-left party, with seven seats. The Social Christian Unity Party and Citizen Agenda, both center-right, each hold one seat.

Lawmakers elected Yara Jiménez-Fallas as president of Congress. Jiménez represents Fernández’s governing party, Pueblo Soberano (PPSO), and previously served as Cabinet secretary during the administration of Rodrigo Chaves. She holds a master’s degree in public law from the University of Costa Rica and has worked at the Central Bank of Costa Rica and the Ministry of Finance.

Esmeralda Britton-González was elected vice president of Congress. She also represents Fernández’s governing party, Pueblo Soberano (PPSO). Britton holds an Executive MBA in international business from the European Business School in Madrid and served as president of the Social Protection Board from 2018 to 2025, the public institution responsible for the government’s official lottery.

The new congressional leadership will serve one-year terms, ending May 1, 2027.

Costa Rica’s Legislative Assembly is composed of 57 deputies elected by province through a closed party-list proportional representation system. Deputies serve four-year terms; the current term runs from May 1, 2026, to April 30, 2030.
