Costa Rica marked
Workers’ Day on Friday with the
swearing-in of new lawmakers and the
annual election of the president and
vice president of the Asamblea
Legislativa.
The
incoming legislature is made up of five
political factions. The largest bloc is
the Sovereign People’s Party, a right-wing
group aligned with President-elect
Fernández, with 31 seats. It is followed
by the National Liberation Party, a
center-right party, with 17 seats, and the
Broad Front, a center-left party, with
seven seats. The Social Christian Unity
Party and Citizen Agenda, both
center-right, each hold one seat.
Costa
Rica’s Legislative Assembly is composed of
57 deputies elected by province through a
closed party-list proportional
representation system. Deputies serve
four-year terms; the current term runs
from May 1, 2026, to April 30, 2030.
