Costa Rica
celebrates Children’s Day on Tuesday,
honoring the nation’s youngest citizens
with school events, family outings and cultural
activities across the country. Known locally as “Día
del Niño,” the day is dedicated to
recognizing children’s
rights, promoting their well-being
and underscoring the importance of
education in shaping the next
generation. According to the
Ministry of Public Education, most
public schools organize parties, games
and cultural performances for students. “This is another
opportunity to honor our children’s joy,
wonder and boundless energy,” the
ministry said in a statement. Children’s Day has been observed in Costa Rica since 1946, when
it was established to highlight the
importance of love, respect and
education for children. The date
coincides with the founding of the
Patronato Nacional de la Infancia, or PANI, the
National Child Welfare Agency.
Celebrations
extended beyond classrooms as
government institutions, cultural
organizations and families joined in
activities throughout the country. The
Ministry of Culture scheduled free
shows in towns nationwide, giving
children an opportunity to connect
with local music traditions. In
San José, the National
Amusement Park
offers a full day of attractions,
including inflatable games, fantasy
character shows, children’s musicals
and access to all rides. Tickets are
available at the park box office. The Children’s
Museum
in San José hosts a “Childhood Party,”
featuring play areas, puppet shows,
storytelling, concerts and more than
50 interactive rooms. Tickets are
available at the museum box office. In
Alajuela, the José Figueres
Ferrer Cultural and Historical
Center
presents the play “Chinto and the Pirate Boy,”
a special show for children. The story
focuses on true friendship, the power
of imagination to overcome
difficulties and
hope for a better future. Performances
are scheduled throughout the day, with
shows every two hours. Admission was
free.
Many families also marked the day
by spending time together, often
visiting amusement parks or movie
theaters. While Costa Rica observes
Children’s Day on Sept. 9, the date
varies around the world. The United States recognizes
National Children’s Day on the
second Sunday in June, Canada
commemorates the day on Nov. 20, and
the United Kingdom observes it on
May 15. The concept of Children’s Day
dates back to 1925, when the first International Children’s Day
was declared at the World Conference on Child Welfare
in Geneva. Since 1950, many nations have
observed the day on June 1. The United Nations General
Assembly later established World
Children’s Day on Nov. 20, the same
date it adopted the Declaration of
the Rights of the Child in 1959. For Costa Rica, Children’s Day
remains a reminder to cherish
childhood and continue strengthening
protections for children’s rights.
