Costa Rican authorities on Friday arrested a man suspected of making death threats against President Laura Fernández-Delgado and allegedly encouraging others to kill her through social media posts, officials said.

The suspect, identified by the surname Ordóñez, is a resident of San Carlos Canton in Alajuela Province.

According to the Ministry of Public Security (MSP), authorities launched an investigation after receiving reports that he had allegedly posted threats against the president and incited others to carry out violence against her.

The investigation began after Elder Monge, head of the police department in San Carlos Canton, filed a formal complaint with the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) regarding the alleged threats.

OIJ agents subsequently located and arrested Ordóñez on Friday afternoon while he was in a public area of San Carlos Canton.

Authorities said the suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Public Ministry's offices in Alajuela, where he is being questioned by investigators. He remains detained while a judge determines possible pretrial measures in connection with the alleged threats.

The arrest came just hours after Fernández was evacuated Friday morning during a working visit to the Crucitas district of San Carlos Canton after an alleged explosion was heard near the operations base where she and other government officials were gathered.

Authorities emphasized that Ordóñez was not arrested in connection with the reported explosion.
