American voters living abroad, regardless of where you are, you have the right to vote in the US midterm election. If you are an overseas voter who doesn't plan a trip home to vote in person, you need to act now.

Here are the basics. Election Day is November 3rd. All 55 U.S. states, territories, and the District of Columbia permit absentee voting, although they don't all follow the same rules and procedures. To ensure your vote gets counted, you can check out any of the overseas voter assistance services online to connect with your voting location and to request a ballot.

For example, the U.S. government’s official site is the Federal Voter Assistance Program, under the direction of the Department of Defense: Fvap.gov. The most familiar site is VoteFromAbroad.org, supported by Democrats Abroad, but open to all voters regardless of affiliation. Each of these provides different levels of personal support, from general information to one-on-one assistance by actual people.

According to Connie Sandlin, who is the phonebanking coordinator for Democrats Abroad Costa Rica, the top priority is any U.S. citizen who resides in one of the 18 states that require overseas ballots to be returned by mail. She and her team of about 20+ volunteers are targeting them around the world and are finding many who are as alarmed by the current administration and efforts to disenfranchise voters as those in the US.

Ballots will be emailed to overseas voters on September 19, 2026. Some states have already started to mail out ballots. You are encouraged to vote and return completed ballots as quickly as possible by the most efficient means available to you by your State. Federal law provides overseas voters with a backup option when delays occur in receiving or returning a ballot. Known as the Federal Write-in Absentee Ballot, concerned voters can receive additional information about it at the Vote From Abroad site.

If you want your voice heard, make voting a priority.
