The Zurquí
Tunnel on Route 32, known as
the Braulio Carrillo highway, which
connects the provinces of San José and
Limón, will reopen on Wednesday at noon,
announced the Ministry of Public
Transports. According to
officials, access to the subterranean
tunnel route was restricted while workers
cleaned the drainage system, pipes, and
asphalt. They also removed tree branches
and debris from the road. This tunnel
is located in the Zurquí Summit area,
which is known for its winding roads and
challenging terrain.
The tunnel, inaugurated in 1984, was designed to increase the highway's safety and efficiency, particularly during severe thunderstorms. It is part of a larger infrastructure project in Costa Rica to improve transportation and communication throughout the country.
The Zurquí tunnel maintenance is one of several infrastructure improvement projects developed in Costa Rica. Recently, authorities announced that a section of the road near Juan Santamaría International Airport was closed to traffic for about three months.
