The Sunnyvale, CA. USA-based, industrial supply company R.S. Hughes opened its operations in  BES Free Trade Zone in Alajuela Province.

The country's free zones regime to national and foreign companies that wish to develop their operations encouraging foreign direct investment, commercial exchange and job creation.

“Our dedication to service and our customers and the industry at large were primary drivers in our expansion to Costa Rica, where many of our medical device customers are located,” said Alan Belinky, general manager, of R.S. Hughes Latin America. “With far-reaching national locations in the U.S. and Mexico and a team ready to serve our customers’ needs, this strategic move is exemplary of our core values, including our relentless commitment to serve others.”

According to the firm, poised for growth amid growing demand, the distribution center will warehouse medical device manufacturing supplies, provide personalized customer service support and distribute more than 350 units of different products.

Within the new facility, the firm goal is to implement a unique custom solution offering for customers, alongside trusted suppliers, allowing the corporation to expand its current distribution relationship to the country.

With office space and 1,200 m2 of storage space, the facility includes regular and chemical product storage, temperature-controlled rooms and cold storage.

“In a post-pandemic, nearshoring world, customers are more and more seeking local suppliers to meet their production needs,” Belinky said. “Within our new facility, we can also offer our customers the opportunity to store inventory in our warehouse and our product experts can provide personalized customer service support through daily deliveries.”

R.S. Hughes produces a wide range of medical supplies that includes medical devices, cleanroom supplies and medical safety equipment.

Servicing customers across the globe, the firm provides products to clinics, hospitals, labs, and surgical and medical instrument manufacturers.

The company is actively hiring in departments such as sales, operations, finance, administration, marketing, warehouse and supply. Those interested in a job vacancy should visit the firm careers website.

R.S. Hughes is one of many international firms hiring in Costa Rica. Recently, the Swiss company, Straumann Group, a factory of tooth replacement and orthodontic solutions opened operations in Heredia Province.

However, Costa Rica's unemployment remains at 7.3%, according to the National Employment Survey. Data recorded from Oct. to Dec. 2023 shows more than 164,000 people without registered jobs. Of these, 95,000 are men, making up 58% of the unemployed people in the country.
