The appeal of traffic fines can be made by email
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Motorists usually carry out the process of appealing traffic fine at the offices of the Road Safety Council. However, now that process can be done by email.

According to the council, there are 12 offices throughout the country that handle claims for traffic tickets. But now, the option of making these claims can be made by sending an email to recep-impugnaciones@csv.go.cr

According to Carlos Rivas, legal director of the council, this option is equally valid to process claims without the need for the driver to visit any council office.

To make the claim, the driver must submit the challenge form that includes a digital signature.

"The accepted digital signature is only the one issued by an office of the Official Registry of the Central Bank of Costa Rica," said the council in its statement.

It should also be noted that the Digital Signature does not require authentication by a lawyer.

Additional documents, such as a copy of the ID and other proof, such as photos or records, must be attached in the message.

According to the council, the driver has 10 business days to appeal a fine, counting from the date the fine was received. Holidays, Saturdays or Sundays do not apply.

According to Rivas, "the claim must be made when it is really perceived that an error was made by the Traffic Police officer, and there must be a proof of it. " As usual people make claims, although they know that they committed the fault, in order to delay the payment, to obtain the return of the plates or the vehicle. "

According to the Traffic Law, fines are of record for seven years, so anyone who wants to renew the driver's license must pay the fine in order to get a new one.
