Published Thursday, August 6, 2020 Seizure
of the first shipment
of marijuana from Mexico By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Officials of the Drug Control Police carried out a historic seizure of the first cargo of marijuana from Mexico detected in Costa Rica, announced the Ministry of Security on Wednesday. The case started in a fiscal warehouse located in Alajuela Province. As part of the regulatory merchandise review operations, officers detected packages hidden inside a ceramic floor cargo, imported from Mexico. The incident led to officers from the Drug Control Police to carry a more detailed inspection of the cargo, finding 737 packages with marijuana, each weighing approximately two kilograms, for a total of 1,474 kilograms of drugs, the ministry said. The shipment arrived at the warehouse in a trailer that was driven by a Nicaraguan man surnamed Montes-Guerrero, 39. He was arrested on suspicion of international drug trafficking. According to the police report, the initial route of the cargo departed from the state of Hidalgo in Mexico, to enter Costa Rica from Nicaragua through the Peñas Blancas Border Entry Post in Guanacaste Province. Officers seized the cargo, the trailer, and approximately $480 in cash the suspect was carrying. Everything confiscated is held as evidence of the case. The suspect was taken to the cells of the Public Ministry where he was interrogated by the judicial agents and must wait until a judge orders the pre-trial measures against him. This is the second marijuana cargo seized this week. On Tuesday the Border Police seized a shipment of marijuana that was dumped in the mangrove area near the mouth of the Claro river in the Corcovado National Park, Osa Peninsula, Puntarenas Province. ![]() According to the police report, during a patrol in the area, officers found 18 large bags, seven packages and 56 projectiles allegedly used for the AK-47 assault rifle in the mangroves. The team from the National Coast Guard Service and the Drug Control Police seized the drugs. After carrying out the detailed review of the cargo, the agents reported 907 marijuana packages weighing approximately 500 grams each, totaling 453 kilograms. The judicial agents call on the population to report any suspicion of drug cargo or trafficking to the confidential line 800-8000-645, where there are bilingual agents who can answer calls in English or Spanish. ------------------------------ Should the authorities increase the review process for cargo entering through the Peñas Blancas border post?
