Covid-19 reproduction is under
control in Costa Rica, study says

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The reproducibility rate of covid-19, known as R-t, has decreased in Costa Rica, announced researchers from the Development Observatory of the University of Costa Rica.

According to the research, the R-t rate in a specific population is useful to understand the transmission of disease. The R-t rate on Aug. 1 was 0.87.

"If R-t is less than 1 point, the epidemic is on the verge of extinction or is under control," the Observatory said in its statement. "But if the R-t is higher than 1 point, there is exponential-type proliferation, unless something is done to contain it."

According to the data provided by the Observatory, in the last 67 days (approximately two-and-a-half months), the R-t rate had not been registered below than 1 point. Until Aug. 1, the data showed an R-t rate was 0.87, achieving a lower value than 1 point.

According to the study, the R-t rate of less than 1 point has been recorded 5 times (twice in March, twice in May, and once on Aug. 1.

Development Observatory, inaugurated in 1997, has served as a research support center for the University of Costa Rica, dedicated to the analysis of indicators and data.

However, the analysis shows two possible scenarios.

The first is the management of the pandemic with an R-t less than 1 point. In this scenario, the rate should remain at 0.7 in the next four weeks, with 350 new cases daily at the end of August.

The second is with an R-t rate of 1.5 (the situation that happened before July 11). In this scenario, the exponential increase would return, with reports of 1,800 new cases per day by the end of August, with the aggravating circumstance that the number of patients and deaths would continue to grow each day.

The complete analysis can be reached on the following of the Observatory  website.

The statistical information on the cases of covid-19 in the country is vital for the further management of the pandemic.

According to the most recent report of the Ministry of Health, covid-19 continues spreading throughout the country with an increase in infected cases and deaths.

As of Sunday afternoon, the ministry provided the following statistics on the status of the virus in the country:

788 new covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 14,288 active cases. The ages of patients infected range from one three-month-old baby to a 100-year-old person.

5,213 foreign-born people have been infected of the 18,975 cases since March, approximately 27% of the total cases.

• 366 patients are being treated in public hospitals, where 268 patients are in recovery rooms and 98 are in Intensive Care Units, ICU, with delicate health conditions. Most of the infected patients are quarantined in their homes.

• 4,585 coronavirus patients have fully recovered, which is a 24% recovery rate.

• 61,433 people have been ruled out.

• 92,680 medical covid-19 tests have been made.

162 deaths of patients infected with covid-19 since March. Which is a 0.8% death rate. Of these 58 were women and 104 men.

As of Wednesday, July 30, authorities reported 30 foreign-born people have died since March, a total 22% of the dead. However, the ministry confirmed that they will not continue providing information on the number of foreign-born people who die from covid-19 in the country.

Readers can see the updated number of total patients in each district at the National Distance Education University on its Covid-19 Map.

As of Sunday night, the pandemic has killed 689,347 patients worldwide, according to recent statistics reported by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.
