Second victim of brain-eatingamoeba remains hospitalized By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Specialists from Max Peralta Hospital in Cartago Province reported Sunday, the stable status of a baby girl who has been infected with the amoeba Naegleria fowleri, so-called brain-eating amoeba. According to the report of the specialists, the victim is a 4-year-old who has been hospitalized since Tuesday. Laboratory exams confirmed that the girl was infected with the amoeba on Saturday, Feb. 8, after having been on tour with her family at a tourist site with hot springs located in San Carlos in the Province of Alajuela. In the first hours of contagion, the girl presented aggressive vomiting and fever, so the family took her to the hospital emergency room. According to Krisia Díaz, a physician and director of the hospital, the girl is reacting positively to the medical treatment because the family quickly identified the first symptoms and informed the hospital about the visit to the hot springs. "This allowed us to provide all the attention required for the girl in the first 24 hours that are crucial in these cases." According to the specialists, the girl continues with permanent surveillance and intensive care. It is expected that in the early hours today, hospital specialists will make a further report. This microorganism is found in warm fresh waters like lakes, rivers and hot springs, said the ministry. It enters through the nose to reach and destroy brain tissue, said the authorities. It is important to clarify that the infection is not transmitted from person to person or by drinking water or any body parts in contact with the hot spring water. It is only transmitted by the inhalation of water through the nose, physicians said. This is the second case of a person infected by the brain-eater amoeba reported this year, and the third during the history of the record of this amoeba in Costa Rica. ![]() In January authorities of the Ministry of Health confirmed the detection of a very isolated case of meningitis caused by the killer amoeba. According to the ministry, the case involves a 15-year-old who was infected after having inhaled water while he was swimming in a natural hot spring in Guayabo de Bagaces, Guanacaste. He died a few days after becoming infected. He was treated at the Liberia Hospital in Guanacaste Province. The first case of brain-eating amoeba was reported in Costa Rica's medical records in 2014 when an 11-year-old U.S. citizen youngster arrived in the country when he already had infected by the organism. The boy died after receiving medical treatment, and the family immediately went back to the U.S. The authorities called on the population to increase safety measures when they are swimming in hot springs because the infection is only transmitted through the nose. "A person can make use of the hot springs with the presence of said microorganism without any infection. The risk is presented when submerged since it facilitates the entry of the parasite by nasal route." The way to avoid the organism is not to immerse the head in hot springs, or if you do, use devices that block the passage of water through the nose, they said. Under the precautionary principle, the Ministry of Health said it will issue a modification to the regulation of swimming pool management to include a specific section of regulations for natural hot springs. The new measures include warning labeling on the risk of amebic meningitis and a prohibition of slides or springboards near natural hot springs. According to the ministry, the application of these measures is urgent to prevent the risk of public health in the presence of amoebas in natural hot springs. In addition to the new regulation of natural hot springs, it will be necessary for managers of tourist places with swimming pool with natural hot springs, to place visible signs at the main entrance, parking lots, locker rooms and each pool with the following warning: “Keep your head out of the water. Prevent amoebic meningitis. Do not immerse yourself or throw other people into the water. ” It will also be mandatory for the tourist center staff to warn people with visual disabilities. The Ministry of Health warned the population not to submerge underwater when they visit hot springs and take care of children. A.M. Costa Rica urges readers to share these recommendations with their contacts. ------------------------ What other recommendation would you give to avoid contact with the killer amoeba?
