Exporters seek customers in Dubai

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

National exporters of so-called differentiated foods are participating in the Middle East: Gulfood 2020 fair, which is taking place this week in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Gulfood 2020 sees more than 98,000 visitors and more than 5,000 exhibitors from 193 countries, says the fair in its introduction.

Costa Rican exporting companies that participate in the fair are Paradise Ingredients, Ingenio Taboga, Todo Natural, Costa de Oro, Tertulia Brugge and Agricultural Products Visa. They are looking for buyers for products such as bar mixers, aseptic banana puree, sugar, dehydrated fruits, frozen fruits, roasted coffee and organic cocoa.

According to Costa Rica's Export Promotion Agency, known as PROCOMER, Costa Rican exporters have participated in this fair since 2016.

One of the successful businesses as a result of exposure at this fair was a contract for the sale of banana pure with New Zealand buyers, the agency said.

Ronald Segura, of the Costa de Oro company, said he believes that one of the most important aspects of national exporters participating in this type of fairs is that they have the opportunity to learn about the culture and dynamics of the market, competition and trends of consumption in the Middle East.

According to statistics provided by PROCOMER, the food industry accounts for 13% of Costa Rica's exports of goods.

In 2019, this sector exported more than $1.5 billion. The products that had the highest growth were syrups and concentrates ($38 million), preserved fruits ($5 million) and preparations for making beverages ($4 million).

This is the second international fair this month, where local exporters present their products.

Feb. 10, Costa Rican farmers and exporters presented their products by participating in the international fair of agriculture FruitLogistica 2020, which took place in Germany.

At the fair, there were stands of 3,200 exporters from other countries and an estimate of more than 78,000 visitors, said the agency.

The Costa Rican stand showed folk illustrations of the country as well as agricultural products such as pineapple, banana, roots, among others.

The Costa Rican companies promoted at the fair were Tropifoods S.A., Verita Tropicals Costa Rica, Jalaram Fruit, Exportagri, Fertynic, ByC Exportadores, Barvatex de Heredia S.A., Chestnut Hill Farms, Pineapple Hills, Agricultural Products VISA, Total Fruit, Agricultural Products Del Campo and Michelle Exports.

According to PROCOMER, this was the 20th occasion in which the country participated in this fair.

According to statistics provided by the agency, in 2019, agricultural products accounted for 24% of total exports in Costa Rica, which equaled $2.7 billion. Some of the products that increased exports were cassava 11%, watermelon 21% and mango 52%.

Participation in the previous year allowed Costa Rican farmers to exports mangoes to Germany, as well as roots and tubers to Spain, said PROCOMER.

In January exporters of ornamental tropical plants were presented at the IPM Essen fair in Germany.

The agency promotes national plant exporters companies, such as Micro Plants, Coope India, Servicios Agricolas S.A., Orplant, Ornamental Río Molino, CAMPCO, Ornamental Sapo Verde, Sembrarte CR and Green Pack Solutions.

Representatives of Costa Rican companies met with potential buyers from Germany, Holland, Russia, England, Spain, Turkey, the Middle East, North Africa, India, China, Singapore, Chile, Canada and the United States, said the agency.

"The IPM Essen fair allows entrepreneurs to approach the markets of interest and generate contacts in new places, as well as improve existing businesses," said Álvaro Piedra from PROCOMER.

According to the data provided by the agency in 2018, Costa Rica exported around $130 million in flowers and foliage, mainly to the markets of the United States, Holland and Belgium. Exports were made by 150 companies.
