activities in celebration of African Culture Day
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff Costa Rica will celebrate for the first time today, the World Day of African and Afro-descendant Culture, with dozens of free activities in public spaces in San José. The Afro-descendant word refers to people born outside of Africa who have ancestors from that continent. Workshops, artistic performances, concerts, films, photographic exhibitions, food, folk dances and other activities are part of the celebrations. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Government joined together to commemorate the date for the first time in Costa Rica. During the 40th session of the UNESCO General Conference, held in 2019, the celebration was proclaimed, to recognize the contributions of the African continent around the world. "It is an extraordinary opportunity for all the countries in the world to know the contributions that these populations have made to global development," said Vice President Epsy Campbell -Barr. According to Campbell, throughout history, contributions in science, literature, cinema, dance, gastronomy and many other spaces have been fundamental. “There is much to learn, share and celebrate on this day," said Esther Kuisch Laroche, from UNESCO. "It is a date to celebrate the many vibrant cultures of the African continent and the world, which have had a great influence on music, art and gastronomy. ” Among the activities that will take place at the National Center of Culture, at the facilities of the Ministry of Culture in San Jose, international cultural groups will be presented as: - The Congo, Hookah and Cumbia Costeña of Panama. - Sophia Morris, Drake Murphy, Eli and AkPlayDat from the U.S. - Eskesta of Israel - Black Drum of Honduras - Samba from Brazil - The Bomb of Ecuador Representing Costa Rica will present the groups ERAB, Dancehall, Calipso String Box Group, Grupo Afrocaribeño de Guácimo and the Quartet. At the Teatro de La Aduana, in San Jose, there will be concerts from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m., with Chris Neil of Costa Rica and the artists of the U.S. Ghoss, Bridget Kelly, Drake Murphy, Eli, Ayekplaydat, Roman Johnson & Ryan Kilgore.
