Costa
Rican appointed as President
of the Global Environmental Facility
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
Starting in August 2020, former Environment Minister
Carlos Manuel Rodríguez will assume his new
appointment as the new president and CEO of the Global
Environmental Facility, GEF, the government announced
on Tuesday.
Rodríguez's appointment was made on Tuesday in a
virtual session of the GEF Council, for a term of four
years.
"What we see here is one of the greatest recognitions
of the country's environmental legacy that we have
built over decades," said President Carlos Alvarado.
"Our leadership, environmental policies and
commitments, such as the launch of the National
Decarbonization Plan, continue to give fruits and put
the name of Costa Rica on raise."
According to the government, this recognition
highlights Costa Rica's progress in the field of
reforestation, the development of a renewable
electricity matrix, and sustainable tourism as a
business model.
“Receiving the GEF appointment is something that makes
me proud and commits me, even more, in my task for a
more equitable and sustainable world, but above all,
this appointment is a tacit recognition of Costa Rica
that over decades has shown that we can prosper
socially and economically in a model of rational use
and conservation of nature,” Rodríguez said.
The Global Environmental Facility was created in 1990
to finance and tackle global environmental problems,
climate change, the destruction of biodiversity, the
hole in the ozone layer and the contamination of
international waters.
It is a provisional fund, managed by three agencies:
the United Nations Development Program, the United
Nations Environment Program and the World Bank.
According to the government, GEF has delivered more
than $20.5 billion in grants and $112 billion in
co-financing to more than 4,800 projects in 170
countries.
