The Antillean conger (Conger esculentus), also known as the Caribbean conger, is a species of eel found in the western Atlantic Ocean.

The unusual fish is rarely spotted along the depths of Cocos Island's shore in Costa Rica.

The Schmidt Ocean Institute, a private non-profit operational organization founded in March 2009, recently discovered an Antillean conger swallowing a complete Greeneye fish near Cocos Island National Park.

The species is primarily distributed from the coast of the southeastern United States, throughout the Caribbean Sea, and down to the northern coast of South America.

The conger has a long, snake-like body with a cylindrical shape. Its coloration is typically dark brown to black.

These eels can grow to a significant size, with some individuals reaching lengths of over 6 feet (1.8 meters).

Antillean congers inhabit a variety of environments, including coral reefs, rocky areas, and sandy bottoms.

They are often found in deeper waters but can also be encountered in shallower coastal regions.

It dwells at a depth range of 120–400 meters, and leads a benthic lifestyle, inhabiting coral reefs and rocky regions.

Like other eels, the Antillean conger is nocturnal, meaning it is more active during the night.

They are carnivorous, feeding on fish and other small marine creatures.

Information about the reproductive habits of the Antillean conger is not as well-documented as some other species of eels. Eels, in general, often have complex life cycles involving migration for spawning.

Antillean congers are not typically targeted by commercial fisheries, but they may be incidentally caught in various types of fishing gear.

The conservation status of the Antillean conger is not well-assessed, and there isn't much specific information available. However, like many marine species, it may face threats such as habitat degradation, pollution, and over-fishing.

It's important to note that specific details about the Antillean conger can vary, and researchers may continue to study and discover more about this species and its ecological role in the marine environment.

The whale shark is another fascinating underwater creature that has been spotted in Costa Rica. This massive shark has been spotted on both the Pacific and Caribbean coastlines.
