A
young humpback whale (Megaptera
novaeangliae) was discovered
dead on Hermosa Beach
in Puntarenas Province, reported the
Municipality of Garabito Canton. Experts
from the National Animal Health
Service (SENASA) are investigating the
death of the 5-meter-long young whale.
They are analyzing samples from the
cetacean's carcass to discover
possible reasons for its death. However,
the whale most likely died in the
Pacific Ocean, and the tide may have
carried its remains to the shore,
they noted. The
Municipality coordinated the disposal
of the whale's remains.
This
is the second dead whale to be found on
Costa Rica's beaches this month. Recently,
another was discovered in Pilas Beach in
Guanacaste Province.
Humpback
whales have a characteristic body form,
with large pectoral fins and tubercles on
their heads. Adult whales may reach 46 to
56 feet in length and weigh up to 40
metric tons. The cetaceans are well
recognized for breaching and other
characteristic surface activities.
They
are in oceans and seas worldwide and
usually migrate up to 9,900 miles yearly.
They feed in arctic waters before
migrating to tropical or subtropical seas,
such as Costa Rica, to breed and give
birth.
Humpback
whales, False killer whales (Pseudorca
crassidens), Orca killer whales (Orcinus
orca) and Bryde's whales (Balaenoptera
edeni) have been documented in Costa
Rica.
The
National Animal Health Service (SENASA) is
the state-owned organization in charge of
developing, planning, and enacting
appropriate laws throughout the country to
carry out its services, programs, and
campaigns for the prevention, control, and
eradication of pests and animal diseases;
it regulates and ensures the health of
domestic and wild animals. ---------------
