Brisa Hennessy, a Tica surfer (a term used for a native of Costa Rica) from Matapalo Beach on the Osa Peninsula, was eliminated from the Abu Dhabi Pro Surf Competition this weekend in Hudayriyat Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

According to the Costa Rican Surf Federation, Hennessy was defeated in the first round on Friday morning, scoring 10.66 points in the opening heat. Bella Kenworthy of the U.S. advanced with 11.77 points.

In the second round, held later that evening, Hennessy scored 5.27 points in her heat, ultimately being eliminated with a final score of 2.61 points.

As a result, Hennessy dropped from 5th to 9th place in the competition standings.

Last week, Brisa was eliminated from the Lexus Pipe Pro Surf Competition that was held in Oahu’s North Shore, Hawaii.

Hennessy will continue her World Surf Tour competition, with her next event being the MEO Rip Curl Pro at Supertubos Beach in Peniche, Portugal, from March 15 to 25.

The Abu Dhabi Pro Surf Competition was part of the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour, featuring some of the top athletes in the sport.

The event served as a preliminary competition leading up to the 2025 World Surf Tour, which runs from January 27 to September 4.

The tour includes stops in Hawaii, the United Arab Emirates, Portugal, El Salvador, Australia, the United States, Brazil, South Africa, French Polynesia, and Fiji.

Hennessy’s parents are U.S. citizens, her mother, Katherine Malia Kobara, hails from Hawaii, while her father, Michael James Hennessy, is from California.

Hennessy previously represented Costa Rica at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she was eliminated in the women’s bronze medal surf finals.

In another recent international competition, a Tica adaptive athlete Amalia Ortuño won first place in the Wodapalooza Adaptive CrossFit games held in Miami Beach, Florida, U.S.A.
