The
Houston, Texas-headquartered Sysco, a
global foodservice distribution company,
has announced the expansion of its
Global Support Center (GSC) footprint to
include a location in Ultra
Park II Trade Zone in
Lagunilla Canton in Heredia Province. Sysco is
diversified in selling, marketing and
distributing food products to
restaurants, healthcare and educational
facilities, lodging establishments and
other customers who prepare meals away
from home. Its family
of products also includes equipment and
supplies for the food service and
hospitality industries. With more than
71,000 employees, the company operates
333 distribution facilities worldwide
and serves approximately 700,000
customer locations. For fiscal
year 2022 which ended July 2, 2022, the
company generated sales of more than $68
billion. In Costa
Rica, Sysco opened operations since the
acquisition of Mayca Supermarket in
2017. “Sysco’s
new office in Costa Rica expands our GSC
footprint. As the global leader in food
service, this expansion leverages our
global scale to achieve our Recipe for
Growth initiatives," said Kenny Cheung,
Sysco’s Chief Financial Officer. " Like
all our employees around the world, our
team in Costa Rica will play an
important role in driving our global
success and fulfilling our purpose of
connecting the world to share food and
care for one another.”
According to the company, the expansion capitalizes on Costa Rica's talented workforce and its competitive position in the technology industry. The company will invest $5 million over five years as part of this expansion.
Sysco’s GSC in Costa Rica is expected to employ more than 300 people in technical and administrative roles, including roles in finance, human resources, technology, supply chain management, process improvement, and project management.
Initially, these services will cater to Sysco’s U.S.-based business units and may grow to service other firm businesses outside the U.S. in the future.
The new Sysco facility in Heredia has LEED certification and a range of amenities for employees, such as a coffee lounge, rooftop, outdoor areas, and training room space. The office technology includes smart elevators, controlled access points, and state-of-the-art conference rooms for both in-person and remote meetings.
Sysco welcomes interested candidates to apply for available positions at Sysco by sending their resumes to costaricagschr@sysco.com or visiting the company careers webpage.
Sysco is one of many international firms investing in Costa Rica. This week, Heraeus Medevio, a technology company headquartered in Hanau, Germany, announced the expansion of its operations in the Lima Free Trade Zone industrial park located in Cartago Province.
Even though new businesses are creating jobs, the unemployment rate remains at 10%, according to the National Employment Survey. Data recorded from March to May 2023, shows that there are more than 233,000 people without registered jobs. Of these, 119,000 are women, making up 51% of the unemployed people in the country.
