Love is worth celebrating every day, but February 14? That’s the perfect excuse to ditch the usual wine or rum and try something a little more exciting.

Living in Costa Rica means we’re surrounded by fresh, tropical fruits year-round, just waiting to be mixed into some killer cocktails for the most romantic day of the year.

Whether you’re in the mood to pop some bubbly, shake up a sexy red drink, or sip on a chocolatey delight in liquid form, we’ve got three incredible tropical cocktails to help you end the night with a bang.  I mean to wrap up the evening with something memorable and really special, like these great drinks or a fun time.

And the best part? All the ingredients are super easy to find right here in Costa Rica.  So, let's go to the kitchen!

Pomegranate and orange cocktail

This is a classic summer drink but a few simple tweaks can turn it into a delicious Valentine's cocktail. We swapped the usual sparkling water for warming ginger beer and added pomegranate, orange and spices.

Ingredients you will need are:

  • 60ml Aperol ( you can find it at Walmart or Pricesmart).

  • 90ml sparkling wine chilled.

  • 2 dashes of concentrated bitters made of herbs and spices (Angostura bitters will work).

  • Ginger beer (or ginger ale) to top up.

  • Ice cubes.

  • Some orange wedge, rosemary sprig, star anise and pomegranate seeds to garnish.

Add the Aperol to a chilled wine glass filled with ice followed by the sparkling wine and bitters. Top with the ginger beer and gently mix to combine. Garnish with orange, rosemary sprig, star anise and pomegranate seeds.

Cranberry and pomegranate mojito

A summery mojito gets a Valentine's makeover thanks to the addition of cranberry juice, which nicely compliments the fragrant mint in the drink.

To fix this cocktail you will need:

  • 8-10 fresh mint leaves plus a sprig to garnish.

  • 25ml lime juice.

  • 2 tbsp sugar.

  • 50ml white rum.

  • 100ml cranberry juice.

  • Soda water to top up.

  • Pomegranate seeds to garnish.

  • Ice cubes.

Muddle together the mint leaves, lime juice and sugar in a tumbler or highball glass. Pour over the rum and stir. Add a handful of ice cubes, followed by the cranberry juice and a little soda water to top up. Garnish with a sprig of mint leaves and a few pomegranate seeds.

Blackberry and champagne

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to celebrate in style with a Champagne cocktail.

The ingredients are:

  • 1 tbsp-25ml cassis or add more depending on how sweet you like it.

  • Your favorite champagne chilled.

  • 1 blackberry to garnish.

Put a champagne glass flute in the fridge until cold.

Pour the cassis into the chilled flute, then top up with champagne and garnish with a blackberry.

Whether you're planning a multi-course feast at home or a quick cocktail before you head out for dinner, have a "pura vida" Valentine!
