A new two-level,
1.8-mile highway over Route 2, and
connecting the cantons of Taras and Lima in Cartago
Province opened to traffic Monday, the
Ministry of Public Works and
Transportation (MOPT) announced.
The $58 million
project, contracted to the private
consortium H. Solís-Estrella, aims to
reduce congestion for the approximately
40,000 drivers who commute daily between
San José and Cartago.
The highway’s
first level is designed to improve
traffic flow from Cartago to San José,
while the second level allows for faster
movement of vehicles traveling in the
opposite direction.
Construction began in 2020 and was initially
scheduled for completion in 2023. However,
minor finishing touches are still underway,
including traffic markings, streetlight
installation, and the completion of a
roundabout on the first level, according to
authorities.
Traffic
officers have been stationed along the route
to help regulate the flow of vehicles while
work continues. Officials estimate the
project will be fully completed by
July.
As
part of the country's broader road
improvement plan, a recently inaugurated
roundabout, named in honor of former U.S.
Ambassador Raymond L. Telles Jr., has also
been completed.
The
Ministry of Public Works and Transportation
(MOPT) oversees the planning and
construction of roads, airports, and
maritime ports, as well as the regulation of
public transportation in Costa Rica.
