Establishment Labs Holdings, a global medical technology company specializing in breast implants, announced the opening of the Sulàyöm Innovation Campus in Coyol Free Industrial Zone in Alajuela Province.

The campus will support the company's global growth with additional capacity and capabilities in manufacturing, R&D, digital media, training, and medical education.

The first phase of the project includes approximately 100,000 square feet of manufacturing, medical, research, and office space. The expansion more than doubles their capacity, allowing the company to provide over half the current world demand for breast implants.

“To the Bribri, an indigenous tribe in Costa Rica, the Sulàyöm mountain is regarded as the center of all creation," said Juan José Chacón-Quirós, CEO and Founder of Establishment Labs. "We chose to name our innovation campus Sulàyöm as a reminder of our heritage and our unwavering commitment to women around the world.”

According to Chacón, they are scaling up the company to support the growing demand for our products globally.

The new facilities also include advanced R&D labs, new media production and broadcasting studios, executive offices, meeting facilities, and a Global Learning Center, which includes a surgical theater and procedure rooms for medical education and training.

The campus includes an additional 45,000 square feet of space that can be used to further expand manufacturing or other capabilities. The state-of-the-art facility is designed to be carbon neutral and uses sustainable materials and other green design elements and standards.

The company plans to add up to 1,000 new jobs over the next several years such as Consumer Marketing Assistant, Finance Global event coordinator, Admin Support and Sales Representative among others. Those interested should visit their careers website.

Establishment Labs is one of many international firms investing in Costa Rica. This week, the Illinois, United States-headquartered luxury travel company, Abercrombie & Kent, announced the opening of a new Destination Management Company (DMC) in Costa Rica.

Even though new businesses are creating jobs, the unemployment rate remains at 10%, according to the National Employment Survey. Data recorded from March to May 2023 shows more than 233,000 people without registered jobs. Of these, 119,000 are women, making up 51% of the unemployed people in the country.
