The Institute of Tourism participated in FIEXPO Latin America, the fair specializing in meetings, incentives, conventions and events, held at the Panama Convention Center, Panama.

At this expo, the country won two awards. Costa Rica snagged the award for Best Country Outstanding Management, given in recognition of the progress and development of effective actions in marketing and the application of a growth strategy. Plus, the country was recognized among the group of most outstanding countries for its commitment to sustainability.

“We are flattered by the distinctions received at FIEXPO LATAM 2023 and it is an indicator that we are on the right path to consolidate Costa Rica as a competitive destination, with international quality venues and high-level providers for the optimal organization of events that strengthen meeting tourism,” said Carolina Trejos, Marketing Director of the Institute of Tourism.

According to the institute, the expo is one of the largest platforms for business tourism that exists in Latin America. The fair functions as a space to promote South America, Central America, the Caribbean and Mexico as receiving territories and convention organizers, congresses, incentive meetings, fairgrounds, congress centers, hotels, event organizers, travel agencies and suppliers of products and services in FIEXPO, to show their commercial offer to professionals from all over the world.

The expo also represents Latin America and the Caribbean in the global meetings market, making it an unmissable event for countries that want to show their potential in this market.

It is characterized by having the presence of high-quality hosted buyers, who participate to find new destinations for their events, with the ease that they are invited by the organization with all their expenses paid.

Costa Rica will host the FIEXPO from 2025 to 2027, authorities said.

"Costa Rica is proud to host one of the most important business and networking roundtables in the industry in all of Latin America for three consecutive years," said William Rodríguez-López, President of the Institute.

About 820 convention-related companies from 17 countries holding over 8,700 business meetings are expected.

The fair is characterized by the rotation of host countries every three years. Some past editions were held in Uruguay, Peru, Chile, Colombia and currently Panama.

According to the institute's statistics, the convention industry represents 22% of tourism worldwide. The profile of convention tourists has a high-income and spend 3 to 4 times more than traditional tourists.

Participation in the FIEXPO fair is one more strategy to increase tourism. Recently, Costa Rican private universities participated in the National Association of Foreign Student Advisers (NAFSA) which was held in the U.S. to promote college education in the country.

Tourism is one of the most important economic sectors in Costa Rica. As of February, the Tourism Institute recorded more than 554,000 tourists have visited the country. That is over 216,000 more visitors than the same period in 2022.

Last year, about 2.3 million tourists visited the country. That is one million more visitors than in 2021.
