President Rodrigo Chaves ordered Braulio Venegas-Dijeres to step down as head of the Pacific Ports Institute (Incop) on Monday.

The administration said in a brief press statement that Venegas' resignation was due to his links to a man surnamed Montes-Fonseca.

Montes is being investigated in a drug trafficking case.

"Venegas explained that he met the suspect (Montes) when they were both at the school of law at the University of Costa Rica," the authorities added.

Venegas allegedly joined Montes at a meeting at the Costa Rican Railway Institute while he represented the Costa Rican Union of Chambers and Associations of the Private Business Sector (Uccaep).

This meeting took place before Venegas was appointed president of Incop.

Venegas resigned immediately, just a few months after being chosen as Incop president in August.
