The Ministry of Public Health has announced a third free yellow fever vaccination campaign to be held on Thursday, January 30.

Yellow fever is a viral disease caused by the yellow fever virus (ARN Flaviviridae) and is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Symptoms often include fever, chills, loss of appetite, nausea, muscle pain (particularly in the back), and headaches.

Most people recover within five days, but severe cases may lead to abdominal pain, liver damage, jaundice, increased risk of bleeding, and kidney problems.

The campaign with 500 doses to be administered at the Instituto Costarricense de Enseñanza Radiofónica (ICER) facilities located in San Pedro de Montes de Oca Canton, in San José.

Appointments are required and can
be scheduled on the Ministry’s website.  Applicants must complete a form to select their preferred date.

Eligible groups include sports delegations participating in international tournaments, individuals traveling to high-risk areas in January, February, or March with confirmed flight tickets, and those needing the vaccine for an international vaccination certificate, among others.

Countries considered at risk of yellow fever transmission in America include Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, French Guiana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela and Trinidad & Tobago, authorities added.

Health officials note that the yellow fever vaccine is a one-time immunization, providing lifelong protection.

Between December 2024 and January 2025, more than 9,000 people were vaccinated, according to the ministry.

The Ministry of Public Health is the state-owned agency that oversees and regulates public and private healthcare within Costa Rica.
