The cost to process or renew a DIMEX resident identification card has increased slightly, according to an announcement by Correos de Costa Rica.

Beginning Monday, May 12, the service fee charged by Correos de Costa Rica (the country’s national postal service) for handling DIMEX requests on behalf of foreign residents rose from $14 to $16.

This fee is in addition to the base cost of the DIMEX card itself, which is issued by the General Directorate of Migration (DGME).

The national postal service company,  has offered DIMEX processing services since 2012. In addition to assisting foreign residents, the agency also issues national ID cards, passports, and firearms licenses for Costa Rican citizens through its ControlPas system.

These services are provided as part of a broader support agreement with the DGME aimed at offering faster, more accessible processing alternatives for both foreigners and locals.

The fee hike, officials said, is intended to offset operational costs.

Applicants can still choose to process their DIMEX cards directly through the DGME where no additional service fees are applied.

The Migration office charges a flat fee ranging from $95 to $133 for issuing a DIMEX card to residents, approximately $75 for issuing a Costa Rican passport, and $3 for the ControlPas.

Foreign residents who wish to obtain a DIMEX card through Correos de Costa Rica can find more information, including how to schedule an appointment and what documentation is required, by visiting the agency's official website correos.go.cr available in Spanish.

The General Directorate of Migration (DGME) is the governmental body responsible for regulating and managing immigration and the rights of foreigners in the country. It handles procedures for visas, residency, work permits, and other related matters.
