A new bridge project near Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela Province could cause traffic congestion because of overnight road closures, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT).

The ministry said the installation of a new bridge will require the closure of roads surrounding the structure on Route 1, along the section connecting El Coyol Canton in Alajuela Province to San José Province near the airport.

MOPT crews began work in May to install a portable prefabricated truss structure, commonly known as a Bailey bridge. The bridge will be approximately 16 feet wide and 164 feet long.

The project is expected to expand the current route from El Coyol to San José from one lane to two lanes.

Officials said that during the final phase of construction, traffic in the area (including vehicles traveling on the roadway beneath the bridge) will be prohibited from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following day.

Authorities are urging drivers to avoid the construction zone and use alternate routes when traveling between El Coyol and San José in both directions.

For motorists who must travel through the area, traffic officers have been deployed and warning signs installed to help manage vehicle flow.

Drivers traveling to or from SJO Airport are advised to expect delays.

Authorities said access to the bridge and all surrounding roads is scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, June 8.

The bridge project is part of a broader series of road improvement initiatives being carried out by MOPT. Crews are also working to install a bridge along a section of Route 27, which connects San José Province with Costa Rica's Pacific Coast, after a major roadway collapse damaged part of the highway.

The MOPT oversees the country's road, port and airport infrastructure, as well as national public transportation policy.
