Two
former National Football League (NFL)
players, Eric Ebron and Khalen Saunders,
are set to play in an exhibition football
game in Costa Rica as part of an
initiative aimed at inspiring young people
to become more involved in sports.
The
NFL stars will take the field for a
one-time game featuring two teams made up
of current players from the Costa Rica
Football League and athletes from the
University of Costa Rica. The game is
scheduled for Wednesday, April 22, at Ernesto
Rohrmoser Stadium in San José,
with kickoff set for 8 p.m.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the United States Embassy in Costa Rica, the University of Costa Ricas sports program and the Costa Rica Football League. Organizers say the goal is to highlight the power of sports to strengthen communities, expand opportunities and deepen ties between the United States and Costa Rica. Through training sessions, workshops and community activities, these standout NFL players will connect with university students and athletes, sharing lessons on teamwork, perseverance and how sports can open pathways to new opportunities, the Embassy said in a statement.
Ebron,
33, was selected by the Detroit Lions in
the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft and
also played for the Indianapolis Colts and
the Pittsburgh Steelers. He now leads the
Ebron Foundation, which focuses on youth
empowerment.
