Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Day National Festival kicked off today with live global broadcasts.

St. Patrick, a fifth-century Romano-British missionary and bishop, is celebrated as the “Apostle of Ireland.” His feast day, observed every March 17, marks the anniversary of his death.

Originally established as a solemn feast day to honor St. Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint, the holiday has evolved into a vibrant celebration of Irish culture. Today, the festival is a joyous occasion enjoyed by people worldwide.

The festivities began Tuesday, March 17, at noon local time in Ireland (6 a.m. in Costa Rica) with the iconic St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The celebrations will continue with concerts and performances until midnight Ireland time (6 p.m. Costa Rica time).

The annual parade draws more than 500,000 spectators and features more than 4,000 participants, including marching bands, performers, dancers and elaborate floats. The extravaganza winds through the historic streets of Dublin, offering a dazzling display of music, pageantry and colorful costumes.

This year’s festival theme, “Roots,” explores identity, belonging and shared stories across generations, celebrating where the Irish people come from and how they continue to grow together as a community.

The grand marshal of the parade is one of Ireland’s most recognizable media personalities, Vogue Williams. Born in Dublin, Williams has built a dynamic career in broadcasting, fashion and entrepreneurship, becoming a familiar face to audiences in Ireland and beyond.

“Known for her warmth, authenticity and strong connection to home, Vogue has consistently championed Irish creativity and storytelling on a global stage while maintaining close ties to her roots, parade organizers said in a statement.

The event is being broadcast live from Ireland on
Raidió Teilifís Éireann website, the Irish public service broadcaster. The festival is also streamed online through the St. Patrick's Festival website and the RTÉ Player website.
