Members
of Democrats Abroad Costa Rica rallied
Saturday outside the
U.S. Embassy in San José as
part of the global “No Tyrants Day”
protest, organizers said.
The
demonstration took place in the early
afternoon and was timed to coincide with
“No Kings Day” protests held across the
United States, according to a statement
from the organization.
Participants
gathered near the embassy to voice
opposition to what they described as
authoritarian actions by the current U.S.
administration, focusing in part on the
use of military force.
“The
use of military force, and putting
American lives in harm’s way, is a
president’s most sacred power,” the group
said in its statement, adding that the
current administration “is now waging a
war for which it did not seek or secure
congressional authorization.”
Protesters
claimed the conflict has resulted in
casualties and high financial costs, which
they said could otherwise be directed
toward domestic programs such as
healthcare, housing and education.
The statement also referenced domestic concerns, including alleged abuses by federal authorities. “We come together to declare that the use of illegal force by this administration is unacceptable both abroad and at home,” organizers said.
According to the group,
the protest was also intended to encourage
civic participation among U.S. citizens
living overseas ahead of upcoming elections.
