Members of Democrats Abroad Costa Rica rallied Saturday outside the U.S. Embassy in San José as part of the global “No Tyrants Day” protest, organizers said.

The demonstration took place in the early afternoon and was timed to coincide with “No Kings Day” protests held across the United States, according to a statement from the organization.

Participants gathered near the embassy to voice opposition to what they described as authoritarian actions by the current U.S. administration, focusing in part on the use of military force.

“The use of military force, and putting American lives in harm’s way, is a president’s most sacred power,” the group said in its statement, adding that the current administration “is now waging a war for which it did not seek or secure congressional authorization.”

Protesters claimed the conflict has resulted in casualties and high financial costs, which they said could otherwise be directed toward domestic programs such as healthcare, housing and education.

The statement also referenced domestic concerns, including alleged abuses by federal authorities. “We come together to declare that the use of illegal force by this administration is unacceptable both abroad and at home,” organizers said.

According to the group, the protest was also intended to encourage civic participation among U.S. citizens living overseas ahead of upcoming elections.

“2026 is a critical election year,” said Martha McDevitt-Pugh, international chair of Democrats Abroad. “Organizing and participating in actions such as the March 28 event is part of a broader effort to mobilize voters and ensure strong participation.”

Organizers added that Americans continue to engage politically through voting and public demonstrations, and stated that they aim to support what they described as free and fair elections in 2026.

Democrats Abroad, established in 1964, is the official organization of the Democratic Party for U.S. citizens living outside the United States and works to mobilize overseas voters.

All eligible U.S. citizens living abroad can vote. Those interested in the online voter registration tool can visit votefromabroad.org, which makes it easy to request a ballot and vote absentee from anywhere in the world.
