Train service resumed operations on Monday after being suspended following a major collision between a commuter train and a semi-tractor on Friday, the Railway Institute (Incofer) announced.

The crash was reported shortly after 9 a.m., according to the Red Cross. A semi-tractor pulling a large flatbed trailer crossed the railroad tracks in the Cinco Esquinas District of Tibás Canton, in San José Province, as a train traveling between San José and Heredia moved through the area.

Reportedly, the truck driver, who was transporting construction materials, failed to realize the train was already crossing the tracks, making the crash unavoidable.

The impact caused the truck to overturn onto the railway line, destroying the container and scattering much of its cargo across the roadway.

Red Cross and firefighter crews treated about a dozen train passengers at the scene for injuries suffered in the crash. One individual was taken to the Rafael Calderón Guardia Public Hospital in San José in serious condition.

Incofer crews and Fire Department units worked throughout the day to remove debris and clear both vehicles from the tracks.

Repairs to the damaged section of rail were completed over the weekend, allowing service to resume Monday on the San José–Heredia line, Incofer said.

Incofer is the state-owned agency responsible for managing the national railway system. It operates commuter train services linking major provinces in the Central Valley, including San José, Heredia, Alajuela and Cartago.
