The Ministry of Health (MSP) has issued an urgent recall for a female aphrodisiac marketed as “Bichota” after officials confirmed it contains sildenafil, a prescription medication.

An aphrodisiac is a substance intended to increase libido, sexual desire, attraction, pleasure, or sexual behavior. Sildenafil is commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction in men, and its effectiveness for women remains unclear.

Health officials warned that medications containing sildenafil should only be prescribed by a licensed physician following an individual medical evaluation. Using these drugs without supervision can cause severe side effects and pose serious health risks.

According to the ministry, the recalled product is being sold illegally on social media platforms,  including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X, by individuals without authorization. In some cases, officials said, the product is even being administered by people who are not qualified healthcare professionals.

Authorities also noted that many of these medications require a controlled cold chain to maintain their quality and effectiveness. Proper temperature conditions must be ensured during importation, storage, and distribution. All medications must be handled in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

Anyone who has taken the product and experiences allergic reactions is urged to seek immediate medical attention at a local clinic or healthcare provider.

The Health Ministry has ordered all unauthorized sellers and establishments to remove the product from the market. Consumers are encouraged to report illegal sales of recalled medications by calling 2223-0333.

In a recent public alert, health officials also ordered the recall of weight-loss medications that were being offered and sold illegally on social media.

The MPS, which oversees the country’s public and private healthcare systems, is responsible for implementing and enforcing national health regulations.

A.M. Costa Rica encourages readers to share this public health warning within their communities.
