The
march began at noon at Sabana Central Park
and
continued along Second Avenue before
concluding
at Democracy Square
in downtown San José.
The event ended with a concert
featuring local pop artists. Costa
Rica's
Ministry of Public Security said the
demonstration concluded without
incidents. Costa
Rica held its first Pride Parade in
2003. The annual event commemorates
the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New
York City, widely recognized as a
turning point in the modern LGBTQ
rights movement.
The
Stonewall uprising began after a
police raid at the Stonewall Inn in
New York City's
Greenwich Village neighborhood.
Although LGBTQ Americans had resisted
discrimination and police harassment
before then, the events at Stonewall
became a catalyst for the modern
movement for LGBTQ rights in the
United States and around the world. In
2020, Costa Rica became the first
country in Central America to legalize
same-sex marriage. The
demonstration honored women’s
achievements, raised awareness about
gender inequality and promoted global
support for women while calling for an
end to all forms of violence against
women and girls.
