The Electricity Institute (ICE) has opened the country's first fast-charging station on the Caribbean Coast capable of simultaneously charging up to 12 electric vehicles, marking another step in the expansion of the nation's electric transportation infrastructure.

The new charging station is located next to ICE facilities in Guápiles District, Pococí Canton, Limón Province.

The facility features six dual charging bays equipped with CCS1 and GBT connectors, allowing up to 12 electric vehicles to charge simultaneously.

Officials said the station's high-capacity power supply enables all vehicles to recharge at the same time without interruptions or any reduction in charging performance.

"We are strengthening the connectivity of the National Fast-Charging Network and providing greater convenience for travel throughout the country," ICE General Manager Verny Rojas said. "In this way, we are expanding the charging infrastructure and supporting the transition to electric transportation."

Before opening the new facility, ICE operated two fast-charging stations in Limón Province, one at the institute's offices in Limón City and another at its facilities in Puerto Viejo. Each location has a single fast charger, allowing only one vehicle to recharge at a time.

The new station is part of the continued expansion of the National Fast-Charging Network, which now includes 52 fast-charging stations and 10 semi-fast charging stations across the country's seven provinces.

Authorities are also building two additional fast-charging stations. One will be located in Orotina Canton, Alajuela Province, and the other in Pérez Zeledón Canton, in the southern rural region of San José Province.

In a related development, ICE recently supported the launch of the country's first privately operated all-electric bus fleet through transportation company BIUSA. The electric buses operate on Route 10 in San José, connecting the capital with several public transit districts throughout the city.

ICE is Costa Rica's state-owned utility responsible for the country's electricity generation and distribution, as well as its telecommunications services.
