Costa Rica’s main highway to the Caribbean coast, known as the President Braulio Carrillo Route 32, is undergoing repairs, as officials work to improve safety and traffic flow along a critical national route.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT) has begun repair work on Route 32, the country’s primary corridor connecting the capital to Limón province on the Caribbean coast.

Authorities said a series of improvement projects will be carried out along the route from March through June.

Crews will begin by marking the roadway near the Sucio River Bridge. Work will take place during daylight hours, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Sunday.

The project includes horizontal road markings such as center and edge lines, as well as updated road signage and related improvements.

Temporary road closures will be implemented to allow the movement of equipment and crews, which may slow traffic.

To maintain vehicle flow, authorities have established alternating one-lane traffic in construction zones. These restrictions will remain in place until the work is completed.

Warning signs have been installed, and traffic officers are managing vehicle flow. Drivers using Route 32 are urged to use caution while navigating the temporary traffic pattern.

The repairs are estimated to cost about $850,000 and will be funded through the MOPT budget.

The current work adds to other ongoing projects along the same highway. In early March, repairs began after two major landslides disrupted traffic near the Chirripó River, in Sarapiquí canton, Heredia province.

The Route 32 project is part of broader infrastructure upgrades across the country. Structural repairs are also continuing on the Tárcoles River Bridge, widely known as the Crocodile Bridge, along Route 34 in Puntarenas province.

MOPT is the government agency responsible for overseeing Costa Rica’s roads, ports, airports and public transportation systems.
