Costa Rica is working to increase cruise tourism from the United States, with representatives from the Tourism Institute (ICT) participating this week in the Seatrade Cruise Global 2026 at the Miami Beach Convention Center in the U.S. State of Florida.

The event is considered the leading global gathering for the international cruise industry, according to ICT officials. More than 80 cruise lines, tour operators, suppliers and travel agencies from around the world are attending, along with tourism representatives from Europe, the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and South America.

Over the four-day event, Costa Rica has scheduled meetings with key industry players, including Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean Group, Princess Cruises and Virgin Voyages, as well as luxury and boutique cruise operators.

Officials emphasized that maritime tourism generates jobs in coastal communities. When cruise ships dock, passengers typically disembark for excursions, directly benefiting local tour operators, artisans and small businesses.

At the Costa Rica booth, representatives are providing information on the country’s ports, entry requirements, health protocols, tourist attractions and available services.

ICT reported that during the most recent Caribbean cruise season, 100 ships docked at Costa Rican ports, bringing more than 190,000 passengers and an additional 80,000 crew members to the country.

The agency estimates that each cruise visit generates more than $55,000 in revenue for the local economy.

The Caribbean cruise season, which runs from October 2025 through May 2026, began with the arrival of the Caribbean Princess, the first vessel of the season to dock at Limón Beach Port.

More recently, the Brilliant Lady docked for the first time in Limón province, marking the debut of the premium lifestyle cruise line in Costa Rica.

Participation in Seatrade Cruise Global 2026 is part of a broader strategy to expand international tourism. Costa Rica has also increased efforts to attract visitors from Europe, including a strong presence at ITB Berlin, one of the world’s largest tourism fairs.

In related developments, Costa Rica recently received a Forbes Travel Award in the Best Nature Destination category, reflecting its reputation as one of the most biodiverse countries in the world.

The country was also ranked the happiest in the Americas in the 2026 edition of the World Happiness Report.

The ICT is the government agency responsible for promoting Costa Rica’s tourism industry.
