Agents of the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) are searching for suspects in the attack on a 80-year-old U.S. citizen identified by the last name Hamilton.

Authorities said the incident occurred early Monday morning when Hamilton was attacked by two intruders inside his home near the Muelle San Carlos community, in Alajuela Province.

Reportedly, Hamilton has lived in Costa Rica since 1970 as a permanent resident and owns a tourism complex in the San Carlos area.

Preliminary findings indicate that two intruders broke into the home while Hamilton and his wife were inside. The residence is located near the tourism complex he owns.

Officials said the woman managed to leave the house and call private security officers working at the complex. Hamilton, however, was reportedly attacked with a knife by the intruders.

Investigators said the suspects attempted to steal the couple’s belongings and fled the property minutes before private security officers responsible for protecting the tourism complex arrived at the scene.

Hamilton was transported to the San Carlos Public Hospital, where ER personnel treated him. He was later admitted to the hospital to recover from knife wounds.

Security cameras installed at the resort and the victim’s home may help identify the suspects. Investigators are reviewing footage as part of the ongoing probe.

Officials have not released additional details due to the active investigation. Authorities said only Hamilton’s immediate family members may request further information.

Judicial agents are asking anyone with information that could help locate the suspects to come forward. Tips can be submitted confidentially through the agency’s 10-digit hotline at 800-8000-645 or via WhatsApp at 8800-0645.

The Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ), a division of the Supreme Court of Justice of Costa Rica, conducts criminal investigations nationwide. Officers in the agency have national police authority.
