Most retail fuel prices in Costa Rica have increased across all fuel products, except for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), the Public Services Regulatory Authority, known as Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (Aresep), announced.

The price adjustment follows a request from the state-owned Costa Rican Oil Refinery, Refinadora Costarricense de Petróleo (Recope), which sought to align domestic fuel prices with recent movements in international markets.

Aresep said the new rates reflect increases in several components calculated when fuel imports were negotiated between Jan. 9 and Feb. 12, 2026. Those factors include international oil prices, taxes, import costs and the exchange rate.

However, authorities warned that the cost of fuel imports could rise in the coming weeks because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The current conflict includes attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran, followed by Iranian attacks involving more than a dozen countries, including Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan, Bahrain, Oman, Yemen, Cyprus and Turkey, developments that could affect global energy markets.

The updated retail prices are:

  • Super gasoline (RON 95): ₡633 per liter (up from ₡628), about $1.33 per liter, equivalent to roughly $5 per gallon.

  • Regular gasoline (RON 91 / Plus 91): ₡607 per liter (up from ₡593), about $1.27 per liter, or approximately $4.83 per gallon.

  • Diesel: ₡530 per liter (up from ₡513), about $1.11 per liter, or roughly $4,22 per gallon.

  • Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), 25-pound cylinder: ₡6,753 (down from ₡6,794), about $14.21 each.

The new prices will take effect this week after being published in the official government bulletin, La Gaceta.

Aresep is the government regulatory agency responsible for setting public service rates in Costa Rica.

Recope, the state-owned oil company, manages the importation, distribution and sale of fuels.
