Costa Rica’s exports reached a new record of more than $22.8 billion in 2025, marking a 14% increase compared with 2024, according to new data from the Ministry of Foreign Trade (COMEX).


The figure represents the first time Costa Rica has surpassed $20 billion in annual exports, government officials said.


The medical equipment industry continued to be the main driver of export growth, generating more than $10.9 billion, a 25% increase from the previous year.

Several other sectors also posted gains. Agricultural exports rose 3%, food products increased 4%, electronics grew 7%, pharmaceuticals climbed 11%, metallurgy expanded 5%, and fishing exports rose 3%.

By region, North America remained Costa Rica’s largest export market. Combined exports to the United States, Canada and Mexico increased 17%, representing an additional $1.4 billion in sales. Exports to Europe also grew 17%, or approximately $688 million.

Shipments to Central America rose 7%, totaling about $263 million, while exports to Asia surged 39%, an increase of roughly $411 million.

In contrast, exports to South America declined 6%, or $29 million, COMEX reported.

COMEX is the government agency responsible for overseeing Costa Rica’s foreign trade and investment strategy.
