By the A.M. Costa Rica staff
Officers
from the Special Intervention Unit (UEI)
of the Directorate of Intelligence and
National Security (DIS) arrested a
Palestinian man identified by the surname
Abuawad, suspected of belonging to the
Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), based
in Gaza City, Palestine.
The operation to
arrest Abuawad took place on Monday
morning as part of a joint effort
involving DIS, the Traffic Police, and
the Migration Police.
The operational
team carried out a roadside checkpoint
near the Desamparados
District in Alajuela
Province, where vehicles were ordered to
stop and the documents of
drivers and passengers were checked.
The patrol
operation allowed officers to locate the
vehicle in which Abuawad was traveling
and proceed with the arrest.
Following his detention, Abuawad was transferred to the Central Regional Detention Center, located in Los Lagos Canton in Heredia Province, where he will remain in custody while the General Directorate of Migration (DGME) carries out deportation proceedings.
Authorities
urged the public to report individuals
suspected of having links to
international terrorist groups and
residing in Costa Rica. Tips may
be submitted confidentially through
the agency’s 10-digit hotline at
800-8000-645 or its rapid-response
line at 11-76, where bilingual
agents are available in both English
and Spanish. The
Hamas movement was founded by
Palestinian Islamic scholar Ahmed
Yassin in 1987 after the outbreak of
the First Intifada against the Israeli
occupation. Since
its founding, Hamas has carried out
attacks targeting civilians. Hamas has
been designated as a terrorist
organization by multiple countries and
international organizations worldwide. The DGME, Costa Rica’s immigration authority, oversees visas, residency, work permits and other processes for foreign nationals living in the country. --------
