Agents with the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) have arrested an Italian man identified by the last name Basile, 67, who was wanted on an international Red Notice for homicide.

According to the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ), Basile was detained in a public area in Curridabat Canton, San José.

Authorities said the French Ministry of Justice, also known as the Chancellerie, issued the Red Notice in 2021, naming Basile as the prime suspect in a case involving extortion and first-degree homicide in France. The victim was identified by the surname Gazel.

Interpol agents in Costa Rica received a tip that Basile was in the country. After two months of investigation, agents discovered he was living in Escazú Canton, San José. Following a period of surveillance, they arrested him without incident.

Basile was transferred to the Migration Apprehension Center in San José, where he remains in custody pending extradition proceedings, officials said.

Authorities have withheld further details, citing the ongoing investigation. Only immediate family members may request additional information.

Basile’s arrest is one of several recent cases involving foreign nationals wanted abroad who have been captured in Costa Rica. Last week, Migration Police arrested an American man identified by the last name La Fauci, who was wanted on an international Red Notice for drug trafficking.

The OIJ is urging the public to report anyone who may be subject to an international Red Notice. Confidential tips can be submitted by calling the 10-digit line 800-8000-645 or the short line 11-76. Bilingual agents are available to assist in English and Spanish.

The OIJ, a division of the Supreme Court of Justice, conducts criminal investigations and has nationwide police authority.
