The Canadian government has released its travel advisory for Costa Rica, keeping the country at a “yellow” risk level and urging citizens to exercise a high degree of caution while visiting.

The advisory, issued by Canada’s Travel Advisories Office, states that travel to Costa Rica remains permitted but warns of ongoing safety and security concerns in certain areas. “Be very cautious at all times, monitor local media, and follow the instructions of local authorities,” the advisory says.

Canadian officials cite violent crime, including armed robberies and homicides, as a concern in several urban and coastal regions.

In the capital, San José, areas of concern include the Coca-Cola bus terminal and market, the vicinity of the National Museum, and Mercado Central.

Along the Pacific Coast, authorities note elevated risks in Dominical Beach, Jacó Beach, Manuel Antonio National Park, Quepos Beach, Mal País, Montezuma Beach, Santa Teresa Beach and the port city of Puntarenas.

On the Caribbean Coast, travelers are advised to use caution in Cahuita, Limón City Port and Puerto Viejo.

The advisory also warns that petty crime, including pickpocketing and purse snatching, is common, particularly in areas popular with tourists. “Tourists are common targets for theft because they are perceived as being wealthy,” the advisory states.

Passport theft is described as “extremely common,” especially during peak travel periods from November through May and again from July to August. Property crimes such as home burglaries, vehicle break-ins and auto theft are also widespread.

Travelers staying in vacation rentals are encouraged to select well-secured accommodations and to lock doors and windows at all times, even when leaving briefly.

Rental cars and luxury vehicles are frequent targets for theft, particularly in parking areas near hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, beaches and national parks.

Canadian officials also warn of risks associated with adventure tourism activities, including white-water rafting, scuba diving, bungee jumping and zip-lining.

To reduce risk, the advisory recommends that travelers:

  • Keep personal belongings, including passports and travel documents, secure at all times.

  • Carry a passport with a Costa Rican entry stamp.

  • Avoid displaying signs of wealth, such as expensive jewelry.

  • Limit the amount of cash and valuables carried.

  • Avoid walking alone at night or visiting isolated areas.

  • Use extra caution in crowded tourist zones.

  • Use ATMs in well-lit, secure locations and avoid withdrawing large sums of cash.

For the latest updates and a complete list of safety recommendations, travelers are encouraged to consult the Government of Canada Travel Advisories Office website.
