The Canadian government has
released its travel advisory for
Costa Rica, keeping the country at a
“yellow” risk level and urging
citizens to exercise a high degree
of caution while visiting. The advisory, issued by Canada’s
Travel Advisories Office, states
that travel to Costa Rica remains
permitted but warns of ongoing
safety and security concerns in
certain areas. “Be very cautious at
all times, monitor local media, and
follow the instructions of local
authorities,” the advisory says. Canadian officials cite violent
crime, including armed robberies and
homicides, as a concern in several
urban and coastal regions. In the capital, San José, areas of
concern include the Coca-Cola bus
terminal and market, the vicinity of
the National Museum, and Mercado
Central. Along the Pacific Coast,
authorities note elevated risks in
Dominical Beach, Jacó Beach, Manuel
Antonio National Park, Quepos Beach,
Mal País, Montezuma Beach, Santa
Teresa Beach and the port city of
Puntarenas.
On the Caribbean Coast, travelers are advised to use caution in Cahuita, Limón City Port and Puerto Viejo. The advisory also warns that petty crime, including pickpocketing and purse snatching, is common, particularly in areas popular with tourists. “Tourists are common targets for theft because they are perceived as being wealthy,” the advisory states. Passport theft is described as “extremely common,” especially during peak travel periods from November through May and again from July to August. Property crimes such as home burglaries, vehicle break-ins and auto theft are also widespread. Travelers staying in vacation rentals are encouraged to select well-secured accommodations and to lock doors and windows at all times, even when leaving briefly.
Canadian officials
also warn of risks associated with
adventure tourism activities, including
white-water rafting, scuba diving,
bungee jumping and zip-lining.
