As President Laura Fernández Delgado advances her administration's electricity modernization initiative designed to strengthen Costa Rica's long-term energy security, expand renewable generation capacity, and encourage greater private-sector participation in the national energy system, one of the country's most significant solar developments is already bringing that vision to life in Guanacaste.

The NUMU Solar Park, developed within Ciudad NYA in Liberia Canton in Guanacaste Province, represents a major milestone for Costa Rica's renewable energy sector. With an installed capacity of 29.2 megawatts, the project is expected to become the largest solar energy facility in Guanacaste and one of the most important privately developed renewable energy projects currently under construction in the country.

Named after the Chorotega word for "sun," NUMU reflects both the cultural heritage of Guanacaste and the region's growing role as a center for sustainable infrastructure and clean-energy investment. The project is being developed on approximately 80 acres within Ciudad NYA and represents an investment of approximately $24 million.

Once completed, the facility will generate enough renewable electricity to power approximately 16,000 Costa Rican homes while contributing directly to the national electrical grid through a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement. The project has secured a Presidential Decree declaring it a project of national interest, underscoring its strategic importance to Costa Rica's energy future.

The solar park incorporates approximately 40,000 high-efficiency photovoltaic panels mounted on 480 advanced solar tracking systems, each tracker supporting 84 panels rated at 725 watts. The facility also includes a dedicated 13.45-kilometer transmission line connecting directly to the Liberia electrical substation, ensuring reliable delivery of renewable power into Costa Rica's national energy network.

Beyond its energy production capacity, NUMU represents a foundational component of the broader Ciudad NYA vision. Designed around principles of sustainability, innovation, and long-term regional development, Ciudad NYA seeks to create a model community where infrastructure, investment, and environmental stewardship work together to support future generations.

Having engaged with national leaders, including President Laura Fernández, on issues related to investment, infrastructure, and economic development, John Scheman believes projects like NUMU represent the type of public-private collaboration that will be increasingly important as Costa Rica prepares for future energy demand and continued economic growth.

"President Laura Fernández has emphasized the importance of strengthening Costa Rica's energy future through smart infrastructure and long-term planning," said John Scheman, President of NYA Developments. "NUMU demonstrates how private investment can help support those national objectives while creating jobs, attracting capital, strengthening energy security, and reinforcing Costa Rica's position as a global leader in renewable energy."

As lawmakers debate new policies designed to modernize the electricity sector, NUMU provides a real-world example of how strategic investment and forward-thinking leadership can work together to accelerate renewable energy development while maintaining Costa Rica's commitment to sustainability.

With construction progressing rapidly toward completion, NUMU is positioned to become one of the most visible examples of Costa Rica's next generation of renewable energy infrastructure, a project that not only delivers clean power but also showcases how innovation, investment, and public/private collaboration can help shape the country's future.
