A new documentary
on Netflix revisits the 2022 killing of
professional cyclist Moriah Wilson and
the case against her convicted killer, a
woman surnamed Armstrong, who was
captured in Costa Rica after weeks on
the run.
“The Truth and
Tragedy of Moriah Wilson,” which debuted
last week, examines the circumstances
surrounding Wilson’s death and
Armstrong’s efforts to evade
authorities. According to Netflix, the
film goes beyond headlines, exploring
the victim’s life, the crime and the lengths
Armstrong took to avoid capture.
The project marks
the second documentary on the case by
director Marina Zenovich, following her
2024 film “Yoga Teacher Killer."
In promotional
materials, Netflix describes the
documentary as an “intimate, arresting
portrait” of Wilson, highlighting her
upbringing in a close-knit family and
the determination that propelled her
athletic success before her life was cut
short.
Wilson was fatally shot in May 2022 in Austin, Texas, where she had traveled to compete in a cycling race, according to investigators.
Authorities said
Armstrong fled the United States later
that year using her sister’s passport to
travel to Costa Rica. While there, she
allegedly assumed false identities and
altered her appearance through cosmetic
procedures. Officials said
Armstrong had attempted to establish
herself as a yoga instructor under
multiple aliases. Investigators also
noted significant changes in her
appearance, including dyed and shortened
hair and visible facial alterations. In November 2023,
Armstrong was sentenced to 90 years in
prison after being convicted of
first-degree murder. She is currently
serving her sentence at the Dr. Lane
Murray Unit, a state prison in
Gatesville, Texas, and will be eligible
for parole in 2052.
