The National Emergency Commission (CNE) has issued a Green Alert across Costa Rica ahead of heavy rains and thunderstorms expected this weekend.

According to the National Meteorological Institute (IMN), the downpours will be fueled by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), a low-pressure system, also known as the doldrums, that frequently brings severe weather to the region. It is moving from the Pacific Ocean across Costa Rica toward the Caribbean Sea, a path that often intensifies rainfall.

Meteorologists say the core of the disturbance will pass from Friday into Saturday, with lingering effects likely through Sunday. Conditions are expected to improve on Monday.

Rainfall amounts will vary across the country:

  • Central Mountain Range: 30–60 millimeters, with the heaviest precipitation at higher elevations.

  • Pacific Coast (Guanacaste and Puntarenas provinces): 30–65 millimeters.

  • Central Valley (San José, Alajuela, Heredia, and Cartago): 10–30 millimeters.

  • Caribbean Coast (Limón province): 20–50 millimeters, with thunderstorms likely.

A Green Alert signals increased monitoring by local emergency committees, though no Yellow, Orange, or Red alerts have been issued as of Friday. Authorities stress that while conditions are not yet critical, ongoing vigilance is necessary to protect communities.

Officials urge residents to take the following precautions:

  • Avoid rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water during heavy rains.

  • In mountainous areas, watch for landslides and falling debris.

  • Families and businesses in high-risk zones should have an evacuation plan.

  • Drivers should be cautious of flooding, slippery roads, and fog.

  • During thunderstorms, stay indoors and avoid using electronic devices.

  • Be alert for flooding in low-lying areas or where sewer systems may be saturated.

  • Watch for strong winds that could bring down trees or power lines.

  • In the event of a landslide, stay away until authorities declare the area safe.

  • Stay updated on official alerts and report emergencies such as flooding, landslides, or fallen trees by calling 911.

IMN is a government agency responsible for issuing weather forecasts, hazardous weather warnings, and related services to protect the public and inform organizations.

CNE works in partnership with communities and emergency responders to strengthen the nation’s preparedness, response, and recovery from natural hazards.

A.M. Costa Rica encourages readers to share this weather advisory with family, friends, and neighbors.
