Costa Rica’s exports totaled more than $13 billion between January and July 2025, a 17% increase over the same period last year, according to new data from the Ministry of Foreign Trade (COMEX).

The figure compares to $11 billion in exports reported for the first seven months of 2024.

The medical equipment industry continued to drive growth, generating more than $6 billion in exports during the sevent-month period, up 34% from last year.

Several other sectors also posted gains: agricultural products rose 2%, food products 3%, electronics 7%, pharmaceuticals 16%, plastics 6%, fishing 3%, and metallurgy 4%.

By region, North America remained Costa Rica’s largest export market, with combined sales to Canada, the United States, and Mexico climbing 21%. Exports to Europe grew 17%, while shipments to Central America increased 7%. In contrast, sales to South America slipped 4%, COMEX reported.

In 2024, Costa Rica’s total exports reached $19.8 billion, up 9% from $18.2 billion in 2023.

To support long-term export growth, the Costa Rican government legalized medical cannabis and hemp production in 2022. Recreational use, self-cultivation, and personal consumption remain prohibited.

A year later, the Ministry of Agriculture authorized the National University (UNA) to become the first institution allowed to import hemp seeds from Canada for research and cultivation.

COMEX oversees Costa Rica’s foreign trade and investment strategy.
