Costa Rican authorities have deported a Tajik citizen wanted in his home country on terrorism charges, the General Directorate of Migration (DGME) announced.

The man, identified as Boltaev, was arrested in August 2024 when he attempted to leave Costa Rica through a northern border checkpoint en route to Nicaragua. Immigration officers flagged an international Interpol Red Notice issued by Tajikistan, leading to his immediate detention.

Following his arrest, Boltaev was held at the Immigration Detention Center in San José Province while authorities processed his extradition. Officials confirmed that the deportation was finalized.

This case is part of a broader effort by Costa Rican authorities to track down international fugitives using the country as a hiding place. Earlier this month, Interpol agents apprehended two Czech nationals in southern Costa Rica. The pair were wanted in the Czech Republic for the illicit production of narcotics, psychotropic substances, and poisons.

Costa Rica recently strengthened its extradition laws. A legal reform that took effect in May 2025 now allows the country to extradite its own citizens, whether by birth or naturalization, to nations with which it maintains extradition treaties.

The General Directorate of Migration (DGME) is the governmental body responsible for regulating and managing immigration and the rights of foreigners in the country. It handles procedures for visas, residency, work permits, and other related matters.
