Suspects held after
abortive Nosara scamBy the A.M. Costa Rica staff Agents of the Fraud Section of the Judicial Investigation Organization arrested Wednesday a 38-year-old woman and three men, 46, 58 and 61, as suspects of the crime of ideological falsehood, use of false document and attempted scam. Agents alleged that one of the suspects, the 46-year-old man, pretended to be a foreigner who owned a property located on Nosara Beach in Guanacaste Province. This man does not have any property but he intended to sell a property to a buyer, who would be the possible victim if they made the deal, they said. Before the property transfer was completed, agents received confidential information from an anonymous source, about the plan. According to the agents, when handling the investigation they established that: - The 46-year-old man pretended to own a property. - The woman, who also accompanied the man, pretended to be his relative. - The two other men were allegedly part of the group of scammers because they had the role of being lookouts when the false contract of sale of the property was made. The scam was planned in an office of a lawyer located in San Rafael in the Canton of Escazú, San José Province, said the agents. Based on that investigation, the agents arrived at the lawyer's office, managing to detain the woman and the man who pretended to be the owner of the property. The agents then arrested the other two men, classified as the guardians, in a supermarket parking lot about a kilometer away from the lawyer's office. According to the agents, these detained persons are linked to three other complaints about similar cases. In the two previous cases, the alleged scams were made for approximately $200,000, agents said. In the alleged scam that was to be carried out in Escazú, the victim would have lost approximately $500,000. In addition to the arrest of the suspects, the agents seized documents that will be used as evidence. The lawyer's office was not related to the case, agents said. After seizing the documents, agents report having searched the suspects' homes, located in San José and Santa Ana. The suspects were taken to the cells of the Public Ministry where they were interrogated by the judicial agents. After that, they must wait until a judge orders the pre-trial measures against them. ----------------------------- Have you heard of scams in property sales?
