Commission will receive more
than $1.7 million to invest
in Olympic team for Tokyo
2020 games

The Presidential House paid
tribute to the national athletes
participated in the Lima 2019
Pan-Am games held in Peru last
week.
"We have a little country that
has proven its capacity in
sports and more," said President
Carlos Alvarado, referring to
the five medals, one gold, and
four bronze, Costa Ricans earned
in the games.
Also, President Alvarado
announced an investment of
$1,752,400 for the Costa Rican
Sports Institute, from the
Olympic Committee of Costa Rica.
With this budget, the committee
seeks to ensure the
participation of the country in
the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games,
which will take place from July
24th to August 9th of next year
in Japan.
According to the Sports
Institute, the budget for the
participation of athletes in the
last Lima 2019 was approximately
$963,820.
Additional resources mean
"financial aid for
high-performance athletes,
expenses in administrative
management, equipment purchase,
expenses in the preparation, and
participation of athletes for
Olympic events," said the
Institute in its statement.
The budget for the Tokyo 2020
games will also be used to pay
for expenses such as uniforms,
camps inside and outside of the
country, international
presentations, coaches services
payments, and equipment
purchases, among others.
As A.M. Costa Rica reported on
August 12th, the Costa Rican
athletes won five medals in the
2019 Pan American Games.
The Costa Rican team won one
gold medal and four bronze
medals.
The medal winners were:
- The gold medal was won by the
athlete Andrea Vargas, in
Women's 100m Hurdle category.
- The first bronze medal was won
by the Racquetball team, Felipe
Camacho and Andrés Acuña, in the
Men's Doubles category.
- The second bronze medal was
won by the women's soccer team
or football as it is known
worldwide.
- The third bronze medal was won
by Neshy Lee Lindo Álvarez in
the Taekwondo category.
- The fourth bronze medal was
won by Diana Brenes, in the
category of Female Judo Weight
-78 kg.
At the end of the games, Costa
Rica landed in 22nd place.
The top fourth were:
-The United States in first
place with 293 medals: 120 gold,
88 silver, and 85 bronze.
- Second, was Brazil with 171
medals: 55 gold, 45 silver, and
71 bronze.
- In third place, Mexico with
136 medals: 37 gold, 36 silver,
and 63 bronze.
- And in fourth place, Canada
with 152 medals: 35 gold, 64
silver, and 53 bronze.
