Second
birth of a baby from
a covid-19 infected mother By the A.M. Costa Rica staff On Thursday the second baby was born to a mother infected with covid-19 in the country, announced Social Security on Friday. The mother gave birth to a baby boy in the Mexico Hospital in San José Province by a cesarean procedure. Everyone involved took safety sanitary health guidelines applied for these kinds of cases, said Social Security in its statement. "Both mother and baby boy are in joint accommodation in the covid-19 unit, even the mother is already breastfeeding her son, who weighed 3,830 grams at birth and a height of 52 centimeters," said Sandra Vargas-Lejarza, head of the gynecology-obstetrics department of the hospital. "The baby boy remains in an incubator next to her, and with the help of an obstetric nurse, the baby is taken out to breastfeed with strict hygiene and safety measures. Every time the mother takes the child to breastfeed, she puts on face masks." The hospital reported that the mother, who lives in the canton of Nicoya, is practically asymptomatic and in excellent condition after her cesarean surgery. The doctors authorized her, along with her baby, to return home. According to Social Security, specialists keep track of cases of the new mothers who are active patients with covid-19. ![]() The first case of a baby born of a covid-19 mother happened in April. The 30-year-old infected woman gave birth to a girl at the San Juan de Dios Hospital, in San José Province. Staff immediately tested the newborn to verify if she presented the covid-19 virus, which resulted in negative. After the cesarean procedure, the mother and daughter are in joint accommodation, where they are kept in isolation from other patients.
