People break the ban on beaches rule

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

This past weekend, the Tourist Police reported 74 people visiting the beaches in Puntarenas Province during restricted hours.

Although the country has begun its reopening phases, authorities continued with the ban on beach access, from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m.

According to the police, the officers gave a warning notice for breaking the restriction on access to beaches, and sent a copy of the reports to the Ministry of Health.

The beach where the most problems have been registered is in Santa Teresa, in the Cóbano District, where 42 cases of complaints were opened. Reports also came in from Manuel Antonio Beach and Puntarenas Beach, both with 16 complaints, the police said.

"Most people come to walk along the beach or to exercise at the established time, but in Santa Teresa Beach, which is a surfing zone, most of the people do not follow the recommendations and enter in the beaches in the afternoons and evenings to practice this sport," said Juan Carlos Solano, Deputy Mayor of the Tourist Police.

In the case of surfers, the police reported three people and seized their surfboards.

Repeat offenders could be detained and taken before the Prosecutor's Office for breaking the ban on beach access according to the Presidential Decree, the police said.

Police warn about an increase in patrolling the beaches of the country to warrant compliance with the ban on beach access.
